"Fix Your Eyes On Jesus"

I was reading this book ("Fix Your Eyes On Jesus") by Anne Ortlund and was really impressed with a couple things specifically . . .

"A work-centered life gets complex, and it leads to burnout. A Christ-centered life--even in the midst of work--stays basically simple, nourished, and rested."

"When your eyes are on Him, you begin to develop a reflex action inside you--it may take time--that shuns what's complicating, what's overwhelming. You'll find you want to do less (but do the most important things) to become more."

"Don't touch Christianity unless you plan to make Him first. If you put Him second, I promise you a miserable existence." Dr. Henry Drummond

Prayer & Fasting

Fasting….it is an unfamiliar concept to many, and a seldom used means of intimacy with our Savior. Above all, fasting should be a personal expression of worship to our Lord from a heart devoted to Him. Fasting is very personal and individual in practice. When going beyond ritual, it is a very intimate form of worship and surrender as a person centers themselves in prayer and more frequent Bible study while focusing their attention on the Lord. Just as Job cried out, “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” (Job 23:12b).
(Taken from my pamphlet, "Worship Through Fasting")

We just finished teaching a two-part class on Fasting using the books, The Beginner's Guide To Fasting by Elmer Towns & God's Chosen Fast by Arthur Wallis. It was such an encouraging series as we watched individuals really commit to participating and pursuing the Lord. It really was a joy and a learning experience. We were so awed by the fact that we only lost 1 person through attrition. That 5 chose to continue through a second class and remained committed to the end. They always communicated their absences and worked outside of class, bringing wonderful testimonies of the Lord’s work in their lives. We are humbled and so grateful that the Lord would allow us to lead others to His presence!

Journaling

I have never liked to journal. Sometimes, I would try to journal my life, my prayers, or my spiritual journey--but it never lasted very long. I've read many Christian books that encourage journaling, so I tried again. Finally, I came to the conclusion that journaling worked for some, and not for others.

However, I now have a different perspective. Journaling what God has revealed to me is an important part of growth, whether I can see the results of it or not. I must be responsible for what God has shown me already, before I can expect Him to show more. This means having a system that works for me, being consistent with it, and coming back to review what I have learned.

Building consistency in journaling is similar to my past experience of building consistency in daily Jesus Time. It is a process. I'm not perfect and will have gaps. But the more I try and hold that as a goal while praying for the power of the Holy Spirit to change me, the closer I get to becoming who the Lord wants me to be.

May we always remember the voice of the Lord in experience and in writing. Happy journaling!

Summary of My Jesus Life currently

My constant prayers are that I would go deeper and become more desperate for Him.

My purpose statement is now: “With passion and humility, to know Him. With compassion and empowerment, to make Him known.”

Those 4 aspects are also a constant cry of my heart: passion, humility, compassion, and empowerment so that I would be an effective servant impacting people’s lives and that He would receive glory from my life.

A couple of key Scriptures for me are: John 14:12 and 1 Corinthians 2:4. (Along with my life verse Psalm 119:93).

He has given me a lifestyle of prayer, fasting, and worship in seeking Him passionately. Wow!

The Secret Place

I can't believe how long it's been since I've blogged! Just life, I suppose. But in the midst, the Lord continues to capture my heart and ravish me with His Love, teaching me through the Holy Spirit and casting a vision before me of the Secret Place which is becoming a reality in my life.

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Psalm 91:1

"But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." Matthew 6:6

The Secret Place . . . a place of protection definitely, but also a place of intimacy and revelation. Oh how we as believers would know the love of Christ as a Bridegroom who desires His church to become lovesick for Him!

Along this line, a wonderful resource is "Secrets of the Secret Place" by Bob Sorge, a book with a flexible format that could be used in personal devotions, discipleship relationships, small group studies, or church-wide exhortations. Chapters are short, but powerful and challenging.
Similar to Francis Frangipane's writings, this book can be read repeatedly throughout a Christian's life to encourage them and spur them on to deeper intimacy with the Lord. It is an easy read that can give surface understanding to new believers as well as deeper understanding for those who are digging for treasure from the Lord. It presents a journey of passionate relationship, not ritualistic discipline. This will definitely be at the top of my recommend list!

Believers can read books about marriage, parenting, and finances; spiritual gifts and spiritual warfare. However, if we never learn to enter the Secret Place and dwell there, we have missed the precious relationship that the Lord desires for us to have with Him. It must be the highest priority in our lives! From our love relationship flows all other matters of our lives. Without it, we are settling for the mundane.

May you grow so desperate for Him in the Secret Place that you must return again and again.

God Sings Over Me!

What an amazing thing to begin to understand that the God of the Universe, the Living God, sings over me!

"The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

"The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me—A prayer to the God of my life." Psalm 42:8

"You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance." Psalm 32:7

I believe that this happens in the spiritual realm from which we experience the benefits. But I also believe that He uses His people as His voice. Such an incredible opportunity to be used as the Lord's voice! I pray that He would use me to sing His song over individuals in an empowered way that would invite the Lord into the situation and usher in the power of the Holy Spirit to collide with the hearts and the needs present for His glory!

This is a great article on the subject entitled "Sing Over Me" by Dennis Jernigan:

Being Passionately Loved by the Lord

Lately, I have been struggling with the concept of being loved and valued by the Lord. In my head, I understand that God loves me and my identity is set in Him. I know that, as Psalm 139 says, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." I could not adequately describe what I was struggling with or why. But one scene in the movie, Prince Caspian (Narnia), especially was moving to me. It was the scene in which Lucy meets Aslan (a type of Christ). She runs to him, and he delights in her and embraces her.

"That's what I desire," I thought, "for the Lord to delight in me, to enjoy me."

Skimming through Terry Teykl's book, The Presence Based Church, has given language to my struggle. I have been approaching the Lord with a Mary heart but through Martha's eyes. (See Luke 10:38-41). I have a heart passionate to sit at the feet of Jesus and worship. However, I somehow thought He was seeing me as a Martha--having good intentions, but needing correction and not quite good enough.

Alicia Britt Chole also brought clarity through some audio CDs from her Women's Bible Study material on Choices. Father God values us regardless of what we do or what we look like, but simply because we are . . . His Creation and meant to worship Him! In that way, my perceptions of myself and the Lord impact my perceptions of others and the Lord.

So from Teykl's material . . . . I want to break away from loving Jesus and working so hard to please Him and move to being completely dependent on His Holy Presence in my life.

“David was a private worshiper throughout all the phases of his life . . . And because he worshiped personally, the Presence spilled out from his spirit and overflowed into his public life. David, like Moses, had a habitual hunger for God.” Teykl p. 170

“The Presence based church, like Mary, ‘gets’ Jesus at a whole different level—it is a church so overwhelmed by the revelation of His Presence in their midst that they can’t help falling at his feet in worship at every opportunity. They share with Jesus a unique love relationship. They don’t count the cost nor worry over their own reputation as they lavish upon Him their love and adoration. They are the offering, humbled and smitten by the Lord of glory. So extravagant is their love that they will expend any or all of their resources just to minister to Him. In return, Jesus defends the Presence based church and bestows on it His favor and blessing. It is special to Him because it ministers to Him in a way that only He really understands.” Teykl p. 234

That's My King

I often feel so limited in vocabulary when it comes to praising the Lord. I have been able to listen in to a few others who seem to have a greater understanding of the character of God from which to praise Him. I want to grow in that area, and so have started looking at His Names in Scripture and Descriptions about Him.
The story goes that an African-American pastor by the name of SM Lockridge was asked to comment on the Lord, and for 3 minutes began to extemporaneously extol the Lord with wonderful descriptions! Whether it was prepared beforehand or Spirit-led, this praise to My King is still very powerful. Watch it on YouTube.

Growing in the Lord's Completion

"being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work
in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" Philippians 1:6

Such an interesting season of my life right now. I feel like a caterpillar in a coccoon struggling to break out. I know there's freedom close by--just beyond my reach--and soon I will fly as a beautiful butterfly. For now, I struggle with believing . . . really believing with a heart of faith in what I read in the Living Word of God. When I come into His presence and read His Word, I know His Truth--and I know it's real. But back in the grind of life, I lose sight again and revert back to old ways of thinking. "But I’m learning to believe in/The promise of Your Word." I am so encouraged tonight by the lyrics from this song by David Olinger!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Deliverer by David Olinger from MorningStar Ministries
Watch it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYeDSHVL26E&feature=related

Not so sure about this journey
It’s an awfully long way
Gotta cloud by day, fire by night
But I still feel so afraid

But I’m learning to believe in
The promise of Your Word
And I’m walking out of Egypt
Into the freedom of the Lord

My Deliver
Is the great I AM
My Deliver
Is the great I AM
My Deliver
Is the great I AM

You are I AM
And I believe that You are
Your Words are true
I trust with my heart
That You’ll never leave me
You brought me thus far

There’s an army fast approaching
And there’s a sea up ahead
Lord, I can feel the East wind blowing
I see a path of dry land

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am also challenged by this explanation of intimacy with the Holy Spirit that I read tonight. My desire is to really realize the role of the Holy Spirit and practice it in my life as I develop intimacy with God, so that I can experience the fullness of God--not just certain aspects that seem comfortable or familiar. "Whatever you do, Lord, don't leave me the same." (Joanna Weaver)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I spent time honoring the Holy Spirit, building a friendship with Him and developing intimacy (for example, saying His name over and over and welcoming Him, and more) my whole walk with God came up to a much higher level. I always made (and make) every effort to say, “I can’t even get into the presence of God without You. I can’t even say ‘Jesus is Lord’ without You. I can’t even get to the Father unless You draw me. If I’m going to get close to the Father, I can’t get there without You, Holy Spirit, so let’s go! I can’t even feel the love of God without You putting it in my heart! The only way I can feel the presence of God is because You make it possible!” Todd Bentley from his web article, "Intimacy with the Holy Spirit."

FREEWARE Bible Software

This is a wonderful free resource available for download. I use this Bible software to take notes, copy definitions from the original language (Strong's dictionary), and research topics and Scriptures. BibleGateway.com is a great additional resource for multiple translations!

http://e-sword.net/index.html

"E-Sword is a fast and effective way to study the Bible. e-Sword is feature rich and user friendly with more capabilities than you would expect in a free software package. The fact that e-Sword is free is just one of the blessings and does not speak of the quality of the software. "

Some friends of mine also use BlueLetterBible.org. Enjoy!

Praise to Our God

What wonderful praise is in the 4th and 5th chapters of Revelation!

“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”
Revelation 4:8b

“You are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created.”
Revelation 4:11

And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”
Revelation 5:9-10

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!” Revelation 5:12

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:
“Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”
Revelation 5:13

Our Life With Jesus

It is taught, "Faith is not based on feeling." True. Marriage is also not based on feeling. However, marriage without feelings is drudgery, and so is faith (our life with Christ). We base our Faith and our Marriage on commitment, but certainly the Lord created emotions for our pleasure and His. What a wonderful freedom to know the emotions in our Faith walk are not wrong! In our relationship with the Lord, He wants to love us passionately. He also desires us to love Him passionately!

“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth." Revelation 3:15-16

Roadblocks

It's interesting how the Lord will bring roadblocks of decision into our lives. I can pinpoint times in my life in which the Lord has brought an issue to my attention.

If I choose to surrender and follow Him, the road is clear. However, if I don't allow Him to clean that area and fill it with His presence, a roadblock comes across my journey and it seems I can go no further.

The Lord's grace brings me back around to that issue after I grieved for what had been lost. The next time, I am ready. I surrender, and am amazed at the journey that lies ahead!

How wonderful is the Lord our God! So Faithful and Loving and Patient!

"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13-14

A Powerful Skit

One Sunday, our youth did a skit at our church. It was such a thought-provoking skit that I wanted to find it and watch it again. Here are 2 versions of the skit, with lyrics that follow.

The message? Life (and the Enemy) can put things in our way of pursuing God and accepting Jesus into our lives. But when we turn to Him, He is ready for us to come and helps us fight through the battles to come back to Him!

"Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them." Hebrews 7:25

Lyrics for the song, "Everything" by Lifehouse

Find Me Here/Speak To Me/I want to feel you/I need to hear you/You are the light/That's leading me/To the placewhere I find peace, again.

You are the strength, that keeps me walking./You are the hope, that keeps me trusting./You are the light, to my soul./You are my purpose, you're everything.

And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?/Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

You calm the storms, and you give me rest./You hold me in your hands, you won't let me fall./You still my heart, and you take my breath away./Would you take me in? /Take me deeper now?

And How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?/Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?/And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?/Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?/Cause you're all I want, you're all I need/You're everything, everything/You're all I want, you're all I need/You're everything, everything./You're all I want, you're all I need./You're everything, everything/You're all I want, you're all I need./You're everything, everything.

Family Life

It's so easy to let the busyness of life run over my family. I get frustrated and demanding, critical and sharp. That's not at all what the joy of the Lord should look like, especially to those who should be top on my priority list.

This is my prayer:
I want to DELIGHT in my children. (Not just see what's wrong with them.)
Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul. Proverbs 29:17

I want to VALUE and SUPPORT my husband. (Not be so self-focused.)
Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. Proverbs 12:15 (NLT)

Prayer For Those Without Christ

Here are some Scriptures to guide us in praying for those who don't follow Jesus. First, pray for ourselves to have the compassion of the Lord and to be willing, available, and prepared. Then pray for the the light of Christ to break through the darkness and for the new Followers to walk completely in Jesus.

Effective Workers
Matthew 9:37-38
Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
Romans 9:1-2
I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. (for the lost)
1 Timothy 2:4
Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Matthew 9:36
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

Freedom from darkness
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1 Kings 8:60
that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no other.
2 Corinthians 4:4
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
Colossians 1:13
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.

Live in the Light
Luke 18:22d
“and come, follow Me.”
Deuteronomy 10:12-13
And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good?

New Lessons in Confrontation

I have learned Biblical truths of Conflict Management in the past, but here are new lessons that I am struggling live out in my life.

Lesson 1: Be quiet and pray.

"A time to keep silence, And a time to speak." Ecclesiastes 3:7b

"Pray without ceasing." 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Lesson 2: Be quiet and pray.

(It might be a repeat of #1, but too easily forgotten and so very important, especially for wives in relation to their husbands. At least, it is for me.)

Lesson 3: Avoid pride. Pursue humility.

"Let us not become conceited," Galatians 5:26a

It is so much easier to see other's faults and mistakes, than it is to see our own propensity for sin. Criticism can be felt, whether it is voiced or not. Our attitudes speak louder than words.

Lesson 4: Check your motivation. Avoid arguments and trying to be right.

"provoking one another," Galatians 5:26b

Just as a child who wants to see his sibling get in trouble, so are we when our heart motivation is not pure.

Lesson 5: Fight jealousies, not people.

"envying one another." Galatians 5:26c

Evaluate the underlying emotion or reason--is it really desiring to be better or at least equal?

Blessings

Recently I "discovered" this chapter in the Old Testament. What wonderful promises to those who follow the Lord! I am amazed at how God the Father tenderly cares for me, and encouraged by His plans for me!

Deuteronomy 28
Blessings on Obedience

1 “Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God:
3 “Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.
4 “Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.
5 “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
6 “Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
7 “The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.
8 “The LORD will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
9 “The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. 10 Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of you. 11 And the LORD will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The LORD will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13 And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. 14 So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right or the left, to go after other gods to serve them."

(Curses follow for the disobedient in verses 15-68)

Praying God's Will

Many times, I have not known how to pray for people in their troubles and sicknesses. I desired to pray the heart of God, but did not know His heart. Sometimes people use the phrase, "may Your will be done," or "if it is Your will." But I want to move past that and know God's heart, I want to pray effectively with faith knowing that He will answer prayers when they are prayed in alignment with His will. But what is His will??

I have seen a little glimpse in the Scriptures. This is what I have learned.

Jesus instructed us to pray:
"So He said to them, 'When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. '" Luke 11:2

A small picture of heaven:
"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Learning more of what heaven is like can give me a better picture of how to pray God's perfect will.

Surrendered Heart

an obedience and willingness to say yes to God (Luke 1:38)
a heart that believes the impossible and responds with praise (Luke 1:46-47)
a submission to God's will and His timing (Luke 2:19)
a heart that makes requests but refuses to make demands (John 2:5)
a heart of love that follows Christ to the cross and dies to itself so that it might live with Him.

(From "Having a Mary Spirit," p. 106)

Quotes from "Having A Mary Spirit"

"When we can't trace His hand, we must trust His heart." (p. 105)

"Part of the Holy Spirit's work is conviction--making us feel both the wrongness of our attitudes and the separation from God that sin causes. We need that inner sense of turmoil that will not let us rest, not let us rationalize our actions or our attitudes, but keeps drawing us back to repentance. Back to our God." (p. 177)

Surrender

“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me;
nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
from Matthew 26:39 (NKJV)

Have you ever been in a place in which you knew God's will, but didn't want to do it? Reading His Word, praying, or listening to a sermon can clarify God's voice, so that we can hear Him. But sometimes obedience is hard. We struggle with letting go of our selfish desires to really acquire the heart of the Father.

But isn't that what intimacy is about? Letting go of my wants and thinking about someone else? Intimacy with the Lord is my goal, but that means I can't focus on me. Surrender. It's a battle between "flesh" (what my body and emotions want) and the spirit (what I really want spiritually). It's like going on a diet, but not being able to control your appetite. You have a higher goal than your body does--but the body has not surrendered to the higher goal.

To think, Jesus struggled with this flesh vs. spirit battle too. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus went away to pray. During His prayer, we see this battle raging and the surrender that followed. “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39) And the battle was so intense that He sweated blood.

I have never been in that intense of a battle, but I do struggle with building the muscle in my spirit so that it is stronger than my flesh. That is the place of surrender. Where the flesh no longer controls, but the power of Christ brings life!

Avoiding Sin

"'Everything is permissible for me'—but not everything is beneficial. 'Everything is permissible for me'—but I will not be mastered by anything." 1 Corinthians 6:12 (NIV)

"Sin--both the act and our response to the act--really does matter.
Yes, God forgives. And He brings healing and restoration to all of us who surrender our failed attempts and shattered dreams to Him.
But in light of sin's painful consequences--hardened hearts, spiritual deafness, and shattered lives--doesn't it make sense to do whatever we can to avoid sin as much as possible?
Isn't it easier to guard the wellsprings of our hearts today rather than sorting out a messed-up life later on?"

Quoted from Having A Mary Spirit by Joanna Weaver.

Sharing Faith

I have learned many things about sharing my faith in the last year. Lessons that are pretty simple in concept, but somehow I missed them.

First, the Holy Spirit is the one who works on a person’s heart. I can work with Him, but I am not assigned to save people—only share.

The most significant paradigm shift is that it should take a lot of time and consideration for a person to commit to a life in Christ. Consider how much research and time is taken for a big decision such as a car purchase, house purchase, move, or career change. Yet, somehow we expect people to make a life change immediately.

Another observation is that we oftentimes see unbelievers as doing OK. We have even become desensitized to their spiritual condition. Many people drive by beggars or hitchhikers because we’ve heard of the dangers and fraudulent activity that is sometimes involved. We have become desensitized to their real suffering. Similarly, we don’t seem to understand that spiritual issues are a life-and-death matter. We just “drive by,” not wanting to get involved. Unlike the supposed need of beggars, unbelievers are really more like drowning victims within arm’s reach of us. All we need to do is open our mouths and share what God has done in our lives. They have a choice of whether to get out of the water or not. But we must offer them the chance at life.

“that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel . . . that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” Ephesians 6:19-20

Parenting

In parenting, I have a deep desire for consistency and love. I find that I must continually commit to be consistent and loving. My natural tendency is to get tired and frustrated--letting things slide because I don't want to do deal with them and letting my emotions run the show.

But I see a different possibility. I have seen it in action . . . and that is what I pray. To be a gentle, firm, consistent parent.

I want to be more loving and gentle. Sometimes, I just don't seem to know how.
"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment." Philippians 1:9

I want to be consistent, even when I'm tired.
"He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly." Proverbs 13:24

I want to delight in my children now--and not always wish they would get over this difficult stage. (After this one, there is another difficult stage, and another, and another . . . ) I want to experience the rest promised in God's Word.
"Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul." Proverbs 29:17

I know and believe that the Living Power of God can change me and cause these things to happen. I believe that He can do the same for you.

Spiritual Growth

When there is a “tree” in the road of my spiritual growth that I can not seem to get around, two things help me get through and get on. Fasting and getting a mentor.

As I look back on my life, significant spiritual growth has occurred, after I finally had enough of struggling and wanting more, when I invited a mentor in my life to challenge me and keep me accountable. It is such a powerful thing to have another person in your life praying for you and supporting you as you grow!

Another tool that helps me grow through the regular course of life is fasting. Busyness and distractions (even oversleeping) can crowd out my time with the Lord and cause me to not hear Him as well. However, fasting breaks the power of distraction in my life and focuses my heart back on the Lord.

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3

“I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given me life.” Psalm 119:93

Backlit

"back·light·ed or back·lit -- To light from behind" (thefreedictionary.com)
"This causes the edges of the subject to glow, while the other areas remain darker." (Wikipedia)

If a person was to stand in front of a sunlit window, another person in the room would not be able to see his/her face. Because the light is so bright, the person in front of the window can not be seen clearly.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we, as followers of Jesus, were backlit? I want The Light of the World (Jesus) to shine so brightly that people can not see me clearly. Instead, they see Him!

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

The Paradox of My Love and His Forgiveness

"Therefore I say to you, her sins,
which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much.
But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” Luke 7:47

For years, I felt that my testimony was of no value and that I really had no story to tell about Jesus in my life. As a result of inviting Jesus into my life at an early age and the growth that followed, I didn't have a traumatic past or "backslidden" lifestyle. The Scripture above grated on my spiritual worth and value. I felt that because I had not been forgiven of much, that I subsequently didn't love much.

The deception of the enemy is so subtle in combining truth with lies!

I have come to know that it was true. I really did love little, because I thought I had been forgiven little. However, it had nothing to do with my past! It is all about now. I am learning that humility and repentance is a constant state of being--not in a sadistic way, but in being keenly aware of God's holiness and my sinfulness. Through this focus of heart, I have learned to love more and more because God has forgiven me of so much!
(By the way, in relation to the blog below about Evangelism, I really believe that I had such trouble with sharing my faith because I felt I did not have a testimony. I am so thankful that God has given me a testimony and a heart prepared to share what He has done in my life!)

One Thing Is Needed

The story of Mary and Martha is very familiar to me (Luke 10:38-42). I can easily skim over this Scripture passage and not receive what God may be teaching me from it. Reading Having A Mary Heart In A Martha World, by Joanna Weaver, helps me to stop and think.

Only "One Thing Is Needed"

And, when I am stressed, I must ask myself, "Have I made time for that One Thing?" "Do my priorities show in my activity?" For me, stress can be a barometer of my heart's distractions.

Only "One Thing Is Needed"
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.
But one thing is needed" (vs. 41b-42a).

Only One Thing: Sitting at the feet of Jesus. Everything else comes into perspective and order. I experience peace and LIFE. I know His heart. I know what busyness He wants me to avoid, and what specific tasks He has given me (not just what I have given me). His burden is much easier to carry than my own. I MUST sit at the feet of Jesus, for the sake of my family . . . there is no other choice.

Evangelism: Everything Changed

During our church service this morning, a song was sung called, "Tell Me When," written by our pastor, Jamie Page. Some of the lyrics are:

When will I look upon Your glory? When will I hear Your voice again?
When will I feel Your restoration? Tell me, Lord, tell me when?
"When you receive My grace, and from your sin you choose to turn away
Receiving the life I have to give.
When you take hold of My hand, and repent of trying to stand alone.
My child, that's when, everything changes!"

He talked about a Christian walking with the Lord for 10-30 years and still not having much fruit to show, still struggling with sin patterns, still not having developed a prayer life, still not having regular times of Bible reading, etc.

I could truly relate to that description and praise God that He brought me from a life of "wasted wealth" (Prov. 29:3) into the Life He has planned for me. God has blessed me with a rich heritage in the Lord, but I didn't want to embrace evangelism. I justified my decision: "That's a special calling that God gives to people called Evangelists." or "NonChristians can see my life and that I live for Christ." or "If they want to know, they'll ask me." I knew that Jesus wanted more for my life in this area, but I wasn't willing to walk away from my comfort zone. I was surrounded by Believers in my comfortable church family and even employment, and didn't want to venture out.

Once I surrendered that area of my life, Everything Changed! The adventure hasn't stopped since!
To feel the presence of the Living God and
look forward to spending time with Him;
To share the wealth of my Christian heritage
with others around me,
and build relationships with nonBelievers
to impact their world for the cause of Christ;
From the guilt-ridden life of failure
in not spending time
reading the Bible on a regular basis,
not engaging in prayer,
and not sharing my faith.
Wow! Everything changed!
